Planet of the Apes

A classic allegory of religious indoctrination against truth and discovery, with added prosthetics. Could have been a Star Trek episode.

The storytelling and the make-up still stand up fairly well (could have been cut down into an episode of TNG, not just TOS...), but some of the pacing is a bit drawn out and unnatural, and the delivery of the line that's more famous than the film itself is out of focus.

Sound design (and the visuals of the first 15 minutes on Earth) mimic 2001: A Space Odyssey (released the same year) but the music doesn't have as much impact as it thinks it does and becomes both jarring and sparse - shots such as the final trek along the shoreline would seem less empty and slow if the music filled in a bit more, which is a criticism I wouldn't give to much of Jerry Goldsmith's other work.

Of course Heston hams all over the shop, but at least I now understand the origin of Troy McClure's voice. All together now... Dr Zaius, Dr Zaius! Dr Zaius, Dr Zaius...
